Essence Sodium butyrate is a dietary supplement in the form of tablets containing sodium butyrate. This compound is classified as SCFA (short-chain fatty acids).
Sodium butyrate is another excellent proposition from the Essence line. Do you know what this relationship has for our bodies?
Butyrate, including butyric acid, is produced by microbial fermentation in the large intestine. It serves not only as a primary nutrient that supplies energy to colonocytes, i.e. intestinal epithelial cells but also as a cell mediator regulating many functions of intestinal cells, including gene expression, cell differentiation, and intestinal tissue development.
To clarify the meaning of sodium butyrate, it is necessary to turn to the term "short-chain fatty acids (SCFA)". They are organic fatty acids containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, produced in the lumen of the gut by bacterial fermentation of undigested dietary carbohydrates and (to a lesser extent) dietary and endogenous proteins.
The most abundant unsaturated fatty acids in the digestive tract are acetate, propionate and butyrate. The production of these SCFAs allows energy to be saved mainly from carbon sources that are not digested in the small intestine. It has been estimated that SCFA may account for 5% to 15% of the total caloric requirement of a human. Despite the fact that butyrate is the least abundant of the three essential short-chain fatty acids, it is very important because it is the main metabolite of colon epithelial cells: as much as 90% of butyrate is metabolized by colonocytes (intestinal epithelial cells). Colonocytes play an essential role in absorbing water, sodium and chloride from the intestinal lumen. It has been shown that butyrate has an effect on the gastrointestinal tract as well as on peripheral tissues - it works through many mechanisms.
Sodium butyrate is the main source of energy for intestinal epithelial cells.
