Chromium is an essential trace element
Minerals are essential nutrients for the body and chromium is one of them. Of all the forms of chromium compounds, trivalent is the most stable form in a biological system found in food, and hexavalent is a toxic agent found in industrial pollutants. Chromium can be found in air, water, and soil. Small amounts (hence we refer to it as a trace element) of trivalent chromium are needed by the human body. A small amount of chromium is found naturally in various foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, spices, and meat (1).
Chromium and glucose metabolism
The role of chromium in the metabolism of glucose and carbohydrates has been known since the 1950s. Chromium can alter insulin sensitivity at the cellular level. Chromodulin, i.e. a biologically active chromium molecule (chromium binding oligopeptide), plays a vital role in enhancing the insulin response in insulin-sensitive cells (2, 3), i.e. it is part of the insulin enhancing system (4).
Chromium plays a role in the metabolism of macronutrients
Chromium contributes to the maintenance of the proper metabolism of macronutrients. So it plays a role in the metabolism of fats, proteins, carbohydrates and cholesterol. Surely you've also heard that chromium helps maintain the proper glucose level in the blood (5). Therefore, chrome capsules are a good choice if you need to supplement your daily supplementation with this essential element. Valuable information is also that the amount of chromium in our body decreases with age.
Chromium and physical activity
It is estimated that most people do not get enough chromium in their diets. Athletes consume more calories than non-athletes, so by definition, their chromium intake should be adequate. However, athletes who restrict calories to keep their body weight low can reduce chromium levels by doing so. There is scientific evidence that shows that exercise may increase the loss of chromium in urine. It is currently unknown whether this loss necessitates adding chromium to the diet or whether the body will increase retention in response to the loss. A reasonable way of action for athletes and physically active people seems to be eating foods rich in chromium and possibly enriching the menu with this mineral in the form of dietary supplements (6). Our product, i.e. Chromium Picolinate 200, is a response to the need to enrich your daily diet with chromium.
