Essence MSM. Dietary supplement in the form of capsules containing 1000 mg of methylsulfonylmethane in the portion of the product recommended for consumption during the day. The product is recommended for people exposed to increased joint loads, especially athletes.

Each capsule is a portion of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), which is well-absorbed organic sulfur. It enters the structures of virtually every tissue of the body, including connective and cartilage tissues.

What is MSM?

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur-containing compound that can be found (albeit in small amounts) in a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and beverages. Sulfur from MSM can be incorporated into methionine and cysteine, which are sulfur-containing amino acids, and act as a sulfur source (1). Methylsulfonylmethane is a simple molecule that contains eleven atoms linked in a single configuration. Man-made MSM is indistinguishable from naturally occurring MSM. It has an identical structure, regardless of whether it was produced commercially or in the natural environment, also in terms of biochemistry (2). Due to the fact that the amounts of MSM that we take with food are really small, synthetically produced MSM allows the consumption of bioactive amounts, e.g. in the form of easy-to-swallow capsules (3).

MSM and sulfur

Sulfur is the third most abundant mineral in the body and is derived almost entirely from protein. Only two amino acids; methionine and cysteine contain sulfur. Methionine cannot be synthesised in the body and therefore must be supplied with food. In turn, cysteine is synthesized by the human body, but this process requires a constant supply of sulfur. MSM represents the organic form of sulfur that plays an essential role in many organs and systems in the body. Plants concentrate MSM, which is available in the soil and atmosphere, from where it becomes available in many foods (4).

What do MSM and connective tissues have in common?

Cysteine and methionine are not stored in the body. Any excess food is easily oxidized to sulfate, excreted in the urine (or reabsorbed depending on dietary levels) or stored as glutathione (GSH). Even in extreme situations, the body tries to conserve sulfur loss by continuing to store available sulfur in the form of glutathione in the liver (4). Due to the sulfur content in MSM, it is used by the body to maintain normal connective tissues (5). Cartilage may not do well with insufficient sulfur, which explains why sulfur-containing dietary supplements [MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), but also chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine sulfate, etc.] can affect joint function (4).

MSM is important for sulfur amino acids

MSM is associated with the skin because of its fundamental role in physiological processes, including the synthesis of collagen, hyaluronic acid and keratohyalin (a mixture of keratin proteins), the most abundant matrix molecules in the skin. Sulfur amino acids make a significant contribution to the maintenance and integrity of cellular systems, affecting the cellular redox state and the ability to detoxify toxic compounds, free radicals and reactive oxygen species. It has been proven that MSM sulfur can be incorporated into sulfur-containing amino acids (i.e., methionine and cysteine) to provide a source of dietary sulfur, and MSM can influence sulfur metabolism (6).
