What is catuaba? If you are not familiar with this term, you must know that Erythroxylum vacciniifolium comes from Brazil, where it is a very popular plant. An infusion made of it is traditionally called "catuaba" (although this name also applies to infusions of plants belonging to other types). According to the available scientific knowledge, the active ingredient of catuaba are primarily alkaloids (i.e. organic compounds derived from plants that exhibit diverse biological activity), referred to as catuabins. In addition to the alkaloids, Erythroxylum also contains, among others tannins, terpenes, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids.
