What is amla?

What is this plant? Its scientific name is Phyllanthus emblica, and is commonly known as "Amla" or "Indian Gooseberry". It is a popular fruit tree that is found in most tropical and subtropical countries, including India, China, Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula. An interesting fact is that according to Indian mythology, amla is the first tree that was formed on earth. All parts of amla, meaning fruits, flowers, seeds, leaves, root and bark, have been (and are still) widely used in various folk systems such as the Indian (Ayurveda), Chinese, Tibetan and Arabic (Unani) traditions.

Why is amla called Indian gooseberry?

The fruit of this tree resembles the green gooseberry we know, so it is easy to imagine it. In general, amla is a very durable tree - it can grow even in unfavorable conditions, and its fruits remain in season for almost ten months. These fruits are a reservoir of various valuable ingredients, including phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins. Hence, the Indian gooseberry is a popular plant in its areas of distribution. In the folk tradition of Asia, different parts of the Indian gooseberry have been used for thousands of years: starting with the fruit, flowers, seeds, leaves, root and bark. We offer you Indian gooseberry extract, i.e. Amla fruit.

What is the most important thing in amla?

Are you wondering what the use of Indian gooseberries can be? First of all, amla can affect the digestive system - it maintains its functions. Indian gooseberry supports digestion and supports better bowel function. In the available scientific literature (e.g. Guo et al., 2017) you can also find information that the tannin leaf flower has antioxidant properties.
