What is guarana?
Guarana (Paullinia cupana) comes from the Amazon forest and was cultivated by the indigenous people of the Sateré Mawé ethnic group about 500 years ago. In the wild, it grows as a woody climber that can reach 10 m in length, but when "domestically" grown, it grows as a shrub that can reach 2-3 meters in height. It has distinctive red fruit which when ripe, partially opens to reveal up to three black seeds covered in a thick white eye-like coating in the lower half. And it is these seeds that contain valuable properties (1).
Guarana seeds
The seeds of this evergreen climbing shrub have been eaten for centuries by the indigenous Brazilian people, who used them, among others. as a stimulant. Guarana has the highest concentration of caffeine (over 6% in seeds) seen so far in nature. The seeds are famous in Brazil for their stimulating effects. Currently, guarana is sold as a dietary supplement in the form of tablets and capsules but is also often found in energy drinks due to the growing preference of consumers for natural products. Roasted seed powder is popularly used in products that improve memory and alleviate mental and physical stress (1, 2).
What are the properties of guarana?
The main ingredient of guarana, thanks to which it is attributed its beneficial properties, is caffeine. In Brazil (and now around the world), guarana seed powder is usually consumed mainly for its toning and stimulating properties (3). Guarana suppresses the feeling of fatigue and supports digestive comfort. Guarana has traditionally been used to support fat metabolism, which in turn helps with weight control (4).
Guarana and caffeine - is it a good combination?
Of course! It is a combination of not only caffeine derived from guarana seeds and anhydrous caffeine but also other compounds contained in the Paullinia cupana extract. In addition to caffeine, guarana also contains other bioactive compounds such as theophylline, theobromine and catechins (5). As for caffeine, it helps to improve focus/concentration and helps increase alertness (measured as the speed of reaction time (4).
Essence Guarana + is a product designed for people with an extremely active and intense lifestyle.
